BEACHES
The Kona Coast is covered with beaches of all sorts. Some are small and secluded while others are larger and have lots of activities. Some you can walk to, others require a 4-wheel drive. Below we have listed a few of our favorites. |
Kealakekua Bay
A 30-minute drive south, with beautiful views along the whole way. Swim or kayak your way to Captain Cook Monument, Hawaii’s finest marine preserve and the site of the Captain Cook Monument. You'll need to rent the kayaks from us or at one of the shops along the way. There are no kayak rentals at the bay itself. |
Old Airport Beach Park
Pavilions and picnic tables, white sand, and a parking lot that looks oddly like a runway. Stay on Kuakini Hwy and keep going north. You will dead end into the Old Airport. |
Magic Sands Beach Park
One block from Kanewa Place. The beach is called Magic Sands because sometimes there is sand and other times there is none. Most known for boogie boarding although there is also great swimming and snorkeling. Watch the waves – they can get rough. |
| Not so local beaches – but well worth the trip |
Anaeho'omalu Beach
Pronounced A NIGH HO O MAH LOO, the beach takes its name from the fishponds behind - one of the finest remaining examples of ancient Hawaiian aquaculture. Anaeho'omalu is one of the best recreational beaches on the island. Excellent for windsurfing, swimming, snorkeling and scuba diving.
Drive north on Queen Ka'ahumanu Highway to Waikoloa. Make a left onto Waikoloa Beach Drive. Follow the signs and take a left to the beach. |
Ho'okena Beach
A bit further but so worth it. Ho’okena is a beautiful beach with swaying palm trees, picnic tables, and a large sandy beach with both shady and sunny areas. |
Green Sands Beach
This is worth finding. You'll need a 4-wheel drive and lots of stamina. Go all the way to the southern tip of the island, and then turn right. Follow the road 12 miles to the ocean. Get a map. You can hike in or take a 4-wheel drive. |
Kiholo Bay
A pristine secluded quiet bay heading north out of Kailua. Go to mile marker 89 and look for other cars parked on the makai (seaward) side of the road, park and hike in. Easy hike, about 10-15 minutes to the ocean. |
Hapuna Beach Park
One of the finest white-sand beaches in the world (top ten by Conde Nast). You park and walk down a paved path to the beach. There is very little rain here, about 6 inches per year, so this beach has practically guaranteed great weather. Maui can be seen 35 miles away. A covered pavilion, picnic tables, showers, restrooms and a small hot dog and cold drink stand make this an easy beach to visit. Good for boogie boarding, relaxing and swimming. |
Spencer Beach Park
A very protected beach, perfect if you have small children or don't like big waves. There are easy paths from the parking area and public rest rooms. At Spencer Park is Pu'ukohola Heiau (temple), Hawaii's most famous and largest heiau. Another small heiau as well as an information shack and nice trails to the coast are all at the same location. The history of these ancient temples built by King Kamehameha is fascinating. From this area you can see the four largest mountains from one spot: Hualalai, Mauna Loa, Mauna Kea and the Kohala Mountains. |
| Snorkeling Beaches |
Kahalu’u Beach Park
One mile south of Kanewa Place on Ali’i Drive next to Keauhou Beach Resort. Easy access, shallow waters, great snorkeling and variety of fish, coral and lots of ‘honus’ (green sea turtles). You can rent snorkel gear, chairs, and umbrellas right on the beach. Local ‘grinds’ (food) are available as is a phone, restrooms, showers and lifeguards. |
Two Step, Honaunau
Some of the best snorkeling in Kona is off this lava shelf next to Honaunau Boat Ramp. After a 30-40 minute drive south, turn makai (towards the ocean) on large road leading off Hwy 11 with a sign to Pu`uhonua o Honaunau National Historical Park. Follow down to the ocean and turn left at the sign for the park. (It's a big stone thing with carved wooden images in the top). Take the first small road to the right. You're on the right track if you see a boat ramp ahead. If there is no parking, the National Park folks are really nice about letting folks park at entrance end of the park's parking lot. It's a short walk from there to the snorkeling site. |

| Sight Seeing Spots |
Holualoa
A quaint artists town where locals share their crafts in the many old shops nestled along the roadside. Stroll the small town itself, which hosts many local galleries, shops and coffee tasting spots. Drive through scenic Holualoa and view the coffee farms. |
Pu'u Honua 'O Honaunau (City of Refuge)
This was a "Place of Refuge" to provide political and criminal asylum. This is where violators of the traditional kapu (taboo) system could come to seek refuge from death. If they reached the City of Refuge they would be purified by priests and could then go back to live safely in their communities. The sacred precinct is preserved as a National Historical Park. The beautiful site on a peninsula of black lava has the preserved and restored remains of a royal palace, a reconstructed temple and three heiaus, houses, fish pond, beach, and canoe landing. Enjoy a picnic at the beach - beautiful for watching the breaking waves and exploring the tide pools, but too rocky for swimming. |
The Painted Church
The Painted Church of St. Benedict at Honaunau is the oldest Catholic Church on the island, constructed in 1875. The small wooden church has brilliantly hued murals depicting biblical scenes on the interior walls, painted by Father John Velge between 1899 and 1904. |
The Kona Historical Society Museum
In Kealakekua is set in a century-old former general store building. It has a collection of photographs and family heirlooms describing Kona's history from the point of view of its immigrant farmers. The museum is open Monday through Friday from 9am to 3pm. |
The Amy B. Greenwell Ethnobotanical Garden
In Captain Cook shows examples of how Hawaiians lived with and used the land during the various periods of their history. |
Hawi Town
At the northern tip of the Big Island, and until the 1970's a sugar farming community, Hawi (pronounced "Haw vee") has a couple of unique restaurants and shops and is known for a statue of King Kamehamaha. Windy Upolu Point is the northernmost point on the Big Island, with a beautiful view of Maui. |
Pololu Valley
A beautiful valley cut out of about 400 foot cliffs by a small river that still meanders through at the bottom. There is a quite steep 30-minute hike to get to the bottom. |
Waimea town, (also called Kamuela)
A town which sits at about 2500 feet elevation and is home to the world-famous Parker Ranch, one of the largest working ranches in the United States. You can visit the Parker Ranch museum, the Kamuela Museum and tour the original homes and buildings. The elegant Kahilu Theater has special productions such as musical groups, dance troupes, classical and modern plays, and in addition, runs popular movies during the summer months. |
Waipio Valley
Located just past the town of Honoka’a, Wapio Valley is a sight to behold. You can see the valley from the overlook, take a picnic lunch and gaze upon the mountains and the ocean. Or you can venture down into the valley via foot (lots of stamina required), a tour, or with a 4-wheel drive vehicle. Great hiking, surfing and lots of fun wait for you below. |
Volcano National Park
A most unique and awesome National Park. The volcano is a 2 hour drive south from Kailua Kona. It's a great day trip and well worth the drive. Drive down the Chain of Craters road in the evening and watch the lava flow or spew, depending on the Volcano's mood. The Visitor’s Center has films, park rangers to talk to and lots of displays. Drive around Crater Rim Road and you will see many spectacular sights. |
| And then there are Rainbow Falls, Akaka Falls, Black Sand Beach (Punalu'u) and many, many others. |

Colon Hydrotherapy
Colon hydrotherapy (also known as colonics, colonic irrigation, and high colonics) is a safe, effective method of removing waste from the large intestine. It is the gentle internal bathing of the colon, and helps cleanse the colon of accumulated fecal matter, toxins, trapped gas, mucus, and undigested food. These can often interfere with elimination, digestion, and also with general well being due to the release of toxins into the bloodstream. Available at La'a Loa Wellness Center with Bethann Duval. |
Jin Shin Jyutsu®
Jin Shin Jyutsu® “Physio-philosophy” is an ancient Japanese art harmonizing the life energy in the body. It is an art (way of being), not a technique (way of doing) that helps us heal.
Jin Shin Jyutsu brings balance to the body's energies, which promotes optimal health and well-being, and facilitates our own profound healing capacity. It is a valuable complement to conventional healing methods, inducing relaxation and reducing the effects of stress. Jin Shin Jyutsu employs twenty-six "safety energy locks" along energy pathways that feed life into our bodies. When one or more of the paths becomes blocked, the resulting stagnation can disrupt the local area and eventually disharmonize the complete path of energy flow. Holding these energy locks in combination can bring balance to mind, body, and spirit.
Jin Shin Jyutsu can be applied by a trained practitioner. A Jin Shin Jyutsu session generally lasts about an hour. It does not involve massage, manipulation of muscles, or use of drugs or substances. It is a gentle art, practiced by placing the fingertips (over clothing) on designated safety energy locks, to harmonize and restore the energy flow. This facilitates the reduction of tension and stress which accumulate through normal daily living.
For those of us addressing existing stress or health disharmonies, or for those simply wishing to participate actively in maintaining health, harmony and well-being, the Art of Jin Shin Jyutsu is a simple and powerful tool.

Far Infrared Sauna
As your body increases sweat production to cool itself off, your heart works harder to boost circulation which increases heart rate, cardiac output and metabolic rate, thus improving your cardiovascular system. Also, as your body temperature rises, it strengthens the immune system by creating an "artificial fever" that kills many viruses and bacteria. Far infrared helps detoxify your body by removing the accumulation of potentially carcinogenic heavy metal and chemicals. It is extremely effective as a part of a total detoxification program, including heavy metal elimination. Your skin, from profuse perspiration, cleans all the impurities creating beautiful and improved tone, texture and color. The sauna is also exceptional for burning calories, controlling weight and removing cellulite, waste products that are trapped beneath the surface of the skin. The most immediate and noticeable effect is tremendous relaxation and decreased stress. Relaxation alone can have a profound impact on health. (We are proud to offer saunas by High Tech Health as part of our services). |

RESTAURANTS
Whether it’s a quick meal, a healthy snack or a memorable evening with a gourmet celebration Kona restaurants have it. Your backdrop to these meals may include fantastic sunsets, dolphins spinning or the romance of visiting cruise ships. |
| KAILUA KONA |
OCEANFRONT
Huggo's 808.329.1493
There's a reason HUGGO'S has been serving Kona over 35 years - they offer one of the best oceanfront settings on Alii Drive along with great food & service. Lunch and dinner served in open air dining area or next door On the Rocks where you'll also find nightly entertainment.
Kona Inn 808.329.4455
This is a good place to take visitors right from the airport for a beautiful oceanside lunch or dinner. The antique ceiling fans over the large open dining area are very unique at this historic site. (They are hooked together and run by a cable system). There is a casual bar section of the restaurant which is wonderful at sunset time! The more "upscale" side is a good place for a nice dinner out. Lunch and Dinner.
|
ALII DRIVE
Roosters 808.327.9453
A sleeper in the downtown Kailua Kona area, this little restaurant in the middle of the shopping area across from the seawall turns out good, "fine-dining style" food, i.e., seafood, steaks and ribs (the ribs are really great, and the portion is large), and there are some good entree salads on the menu. Ther are jazz nites when it's wonderful to have great music with your meal! White linen tablecloths at dinner. Friday and Saturday nites there is live jazz from 6-9 p.m., with reservations required. Lunch and Dinner.
|
THAI
Orchid Thai Café (closed Sundays) 808.327.9437

Located at the bottom of Old Industrial off of Kuakini.
Bangkok House 808.329.7764
In King Kamehameha Mall, the small shopping certer overlooking King Kamehameha's Kona Beach Hotel. Reasonable lunch specials are offered. Lunch and Dinner. |
INDONESIAN
Sibu’s 808.329.1112
Sibu offers curries, homemade condiments, and a very popular, spicy, grilled Balinese chicken served with peanut sauce. Other great choices: vegetable curry, Indonesian-style shrimp laksa (with vegetables, rice noodles, coconut milk, lemongrass, and spices); and the gado gado salad. The Indonesian decor, courtyard dining, and excellent sates (traditional grilled skewers of vegetables, seafood, and meats), are the Sibu signature. Lots of dishes for vegetarians.

FRENCH
La Bourgogne 808.329.6711
Classic French cuisine, in what might be the only spot in Kona where you can forget you're in Hawaii. On the Kuakini Highway, this is a charming spot with very few tables, so you do need to call in advance. Part of the charm is that the chef himself brings the entrees to you, and may even open your bottle of wine. Mussels, duck, locally cultivated Maine lobster and more, created with great attention to detail, fresh ingredients, and appealing presentation. Dinner, Mon. thru Sat. Reservations needed. |

MAUKA OF (up the mountain from) KAILUA KONA
LOCAL FOOD
Manago’s
Located "up mauka" in Captain Cook, the dining room of the decades-old H. Manago Hotel is a local legend, greatly loved for its unpretentious, tasty food at family prices. Breakfast offers you eggs, bacon, papaya, rice, and coffee. At lunch or dinner, you can dine handsomely on local favorites: a 12-ounce T-bone, fried ahi, opelu, or the house specialty, pork chops. Manago T-shirts announce, "the best pork chops in town": the restaurant serves 1,300 pounds monthly. When the akule or opelu are running, count on a rush by the regular customers. This place is nothing fancy, mind you, and there's a lot of frying going on in the big kitchen, but the local folks would riot if anything changed after so many years.
JAPANESE
Teshima's 808.322.9140
This is local style all the way. Shizuko Teshima has a strong following among those who have made her miso soup and sukiyaki a local staple. The early-morning crowd starts gathering while it's still dark for omelets or Japanese breakfast (soup, rice, and fish). As the day progresses, the orders pour in for shrimp tempura and sukiyaki. By dinner, Number 3 teishoku trays--miso soup, sashimi, sukiyaki, shrimp, pickles, and other delights--are streaming out of the kitchen. Other combinations include steak and shrimp tempura; beef teriyaki and shrimp tempura; and the deep sea trio of shrimp tempura, fried fish, and sashimi.
COFFEEHOUSE & RESTAURANT
The Coffee Shack 808.328.9555
Great food, crisp air, and a sweeping ocean view make the Coffee Shack one of South Kona 's great finds. It's an informal place, with counter service, pool chairs, and white trellises on the deck framed by ferns, palms, and banana trees. A cheerful assortment of imported beers; excellent sandwiches on home-baked breads; and fresh, hearty salads made with organic lettuces are only a few of the taste treats. Not a bad start to the day, especially on the charming wooden deck near a towering old tree that droops with the weight of its avocados. Next door is the gift shop and coffee-tasting room, where you can sample some of the many 100% Kona coffees grown and sold here.
Keei Café 808.322.9992
A friendly ambiance, great food, and affordable prices are only part of its appeal. The fresh catch and grilled chicken are highlights, sometimes accompanied by caramelized onions and whipped potatoes. Everything is made from scratch, and virtually everything is grown or harvested in the Honaunau Valley area--meats from the local butcher, fish from down the street, tomatoes grown down the road. Save room for dessert: the bread pudding and coconut flan are fabulous.
NATURAL FOODS
Evie’s Organic Café 808.322.0739
Boasts an entirely organic menu. Voted the "best vegetarian fare in Kona," delicious menu items include tempeh chile, frittatas made with brown fertile eggs, fresh fish tacos and more! Serving all day in Mango Court on Mamalohoa Hwy
Nasturtium Café 808.322.5083
Is the place to go for a delicious nutritious lunch. Owner/chef Diane Tomac-Campogan combines her passion for nutrition and cooking by using only the healthiest of ingredients resulting in a menu that nourishes body, mind and soul. Save room for a yummy healthy dessert. Located just south of Mango Court on Mamalohoa Hwy.
Aloha Angel Café 808.322.3383
A dining room for more formal dining and the famous seating on the veranda that wraps around the old Aloha Theatre. The view sweeps down the coffee fields to the shoreline. The less expensive daytime staples include omelets, breakfast burritos, tostadas, quesadillas, and home-baked goods. Sandwiches, from fresh fish to tofu-avocado, are heaped with vegetables on tasty whole-wheat buns, still generous after all these years.

WAIMEA
FINE DINING
Merriman’s 808.885.6822
Merriman's is peerless. Founder/owner/chef Peter Merriman continues to maintain the sizzle that has made Merriman's a premier Hawaii attraction. Order anything from saimin to poisson cru ( raw fish dish similar to ceviche) for lunch. At dinner choose from the signature wok-charred ahi, kung pao shrimp, lamb from nearby Kahua Ranch, and a noteworthy vegetarian selection. Peter's Ceaser with sashimi, Pahoa corn and shrimp fritters, and sauteed, sesame-crusted fresh catch with spicy lilikoi sauce are among my many favorites. An organic spinach salad (grown nearby, like most things on the menu), Lokelani tomatoes, kalua pig quesadillas, and his famous platters of seafood and meats are among the many reasons this is still the best, and busiest, dining spot in Waimea. An excellent choice for a quality meal with innovative preparations and excellent service. Lunch and Dinner. Reservations recommended for dinner.
